Arctic Code Vault Contributor

久しぶりにGitHubを開いたら、「Arctic Code Vault Contributor（北極コード貯蔵庫寄稿者?）になりました」といったメッセージが表示され、なんのことか調べてみました。

下記リンクによると、ソフトウェア開発プラットフォームのGithubはパブリックリポジトリのスナップショットを1000年保存することを計画し、北極圏にあるノルウェー スヴァールバル諸島の永久凍土に保存したとのこと。

GitHub Archive Program: the journey of the world’s open source code to the Arctic

The code landed in Longyearbyen, a town of a few thousand people on Svalbard, where our boxes were met by a local logistics company and taken into intermediate secure storage overnight. The next morning, it traveled to the decommissioned coal mine set in the mountain, and then to a chamber deep inside hundreds of meters of permafrost, where the code now resides fulfilling their mission of preserving the world’s open source code for over 1,000 years.

具体的には、21テラバイト分のオープンソースのプログラミングのコードをpiqlFilmというフィルムを186リール分に焼き付け、それをロングイェールビーン(Longyearbyen)という町の閉山した炭鉱に運び、数百メートル奥にある永久凍土内に作ったチャンバーに格納したのだそう。



つまり、僕の書いたプログラムも遥か北極の永久凍土の地下深くに埋められ、千年先まで保存されることになったらしい。

保存されたコードの中にはClark & Companyのウェブサイトのデータも。

どのコードが選ばれるか分かっていればもっとちゃんとしたコードを書きたかったし、千年先まで「黒歴史」が残るのは恥ずかしい気もするけれど、死後の祭り。
